The Right Evergreen for the Right Site
The Right Evergreen for the Right Site
Hardly anything adds more to the year-around landscape than evergreens. Selecting the right evergreen for a specific site is very important. If the plant doesn't suit the site it may not do well and may even die. Before planting, evaluate the site and then select an evergreen plant that suits that site. Be sure to check all the lists that pertain to your situation. For instance, if you live up north in Zone 3 and need an evergreen for a lightly shaded area with clay soil and a pH of 7.5, you will have to look at the list for clay, high pH, light shade and Zone 3. Fortunately, arborvitae is suitable to all those conditions.
Here are a few other things to be sure you take into account:
• Clay does not necessarily mean wet.
• Wet soil means occasionally, not constantly.
• A plant suitable to dry soils will still need adequate moisture to establish a good root system.
• An area of “light shade” still gets more than a half day of direct sun.
• An area of “medium shade” is either very high light or gets several hours of sun.
• Low pH - acidic soils have pH readings below 7.0
• High pH - alkaline soils have pH readings above 7.0
