Weed-Free Gardening
To maintain a weed-free garden without a lot of work, use a pre-emergent
herbicide, such as Preen or garden
weed preventer. Pre-emergent herbicides prevent or interrupt the germination
of seeds. They will not kill weeds that are already growing or those that
come back from a perennial root system. So before using, thoroughly weed
the area. Preen can be used in most annual and perennial flower beds, around
trees and shrubs, and in ground cover beds. It can also be used in pots
and planters. Pre-emergent herbicides are a granule that is applied before
planting if you are using two-to-three inch transplants. If using seeds,
the seedlings need to be two-to-three inches tall before applying pre-emergent
herbicides to prevent damage from the herbicide.
Use Preen or garden weed preventers only with the plant material listed on the label and at the recommended application rate. When properly applied, they will keep the area weed-free all season. Please read and follow all label directions.
