Slugs and Snails
Slugs and snails in the garden can cause considerable damage, even
in small numbers. They live in the soil, come out of hiding at night, and
chew holes in leaves of a variety of plants. The only sign that they are
present, besides the chewed holes, is the shiny trail that they leave behind
on leaves or on the ground.
Control can be accomplished by using a poisonous slug bait, like Ortho Bug-geta, or snails can be trapped in small dishes of yeast and water or flat beer, where they drown. Diatomaceous earth is a natural product that acts as a mechanical killer as opposed to a poison. It hinders the movement of snails when it is sprinkled in the garden. Snails will hide under moistened sections of newspaper or boards that are laid in the garden. In the morning, the snails are easy to find and physically remove from the garden.
