Honeysuckle Witches' Broom Aphids
In 1981, honeysuckle witches' broom aphid was discovered in the
Twin Cities area. This aphid is responsible for the characteristic dense,
bush growth or "witches' broom" on the terminal branches of the honeysuckle.
To control this insect pest, examine the honeysuckle in May for aphids or the presence of witches' broom. If any aphids or witches' broom are found, use Ortho's Orthene for control. To totally protect the honeysuckle, five treatments, approximately three weeks apart, will be necessary. In the Fall, after the honeysuckle has gone dormant, prune out any witches' brooms that may be present. These brooms must be destroyed in order to prevent the aphid from surviving the winter. Be sure to read the entire label and follow directions carefully for proper application.
The Honeysuckle "Emerald Mound" appears to be resistant to this insect.
