Tomatoes and other vegetable have a hard time setting fruit when there are extended periods of rainy weather. If your plants have flowers that fall off after a short time, you are probably dealing with the problem. There is an all-natural plant hormone that can be sprayed onto blooms to help set the fruit. The product is called Tomato and Blossom Set Spray. It’s a ready to use formula that is easily applied. Just spray the flowers and adjacent foliage until the leaves are completely wet. Spray again as new blooms develop on the plant.
Tomato and Blossom Set Spray can be used on:
Beans
Eggplants
Peppers
Cucumbers
Melons
Tomatoes
Bird Health
Birds are a great help in controlling pesky insects and slugs, so it’s important to keep them healthy. One important practice is to make sure bird feeders are cleaned regularly,
especially in damp conditions. Fungus diseases can spread to birds from moldy seed. Keep birdbaths clean, too. Refresh the water daily, and scrub them with a stiff brush once a week to prevent the build up of algae and molds.
Hot Pepper Wax
Hot pepper wax is just one of the many organic/environmentally safer gardening products that have been developed in the past few years to help control insects and animals in the garden. This product is made by blending the capsaiscin of hot peppers with a waxy liquid that helps it stick to your plants. Offered in two formulas—one for repelling animals and another for repelling insects—hot pepper wax is safe on vegetables and all other garden plants. You can use it on some indoor plants, too, to deter cats from chewing on them.
New introduction for 2007 - Echinacea ‘Merlot’
Echinacea ‘Merlot’ is a new
perennial daisy that seems to
explode into bloom. Once
established, it produces
hundreds of very large rose-pink flowers throughout the summer. The dark wine-red stems hold the flowers high above dark green leaves. This plant has a very well branched habit and grows about 34” tall and 30” wide. The blossoms last a long time, both on the plant and when cut. Echinacea ‘Merlot’ prefers a sunny spot in the garden and is drought tolerant after it is established. Hardy to Zone 4,
it requires no winter protection in the southern
half of Minnesota.
