If you are looking to plant a garden at the cabin the
following ten perennial plants will grow in the northern
half of Minnesota.
Daylily
Hosta
Siberian iris
Peony
Oriental poppy
Creeping phlox
Balloon flower
Autumn joy sedum
Goldsturm Rudbeckia
Liatris
All of these except Hosta need full sun and well-drained soil. Adding compost to the soil before planting will get the new garden off to a great start. Use Tree Guard® to keep
the deer at bay.
Perennials for Summer Color
There are such incredible arrays of perennials that offer
interest in the summer garden that it is difficult to decide which ones to grow. In fact, you might find yourself
looking at your yard differently, wondering just where you could tuck in a plant or two. Start by planning on enjoying beautiful summer flowers from varieties such as Shasta daisies, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Phlox, lilies, daylilies, Nepeta, Gaillardia, Veronica and Salvia (just to mention a few!). Then add a few plants with fantastic foliage such as Ligularia, ferns, Hosta, lamb’s ears, Alchemilla, Sedum and Heuchera. (Some of the foliage plants have great blooms, too.) Spring may be the most welcome season in the garden and fall may be the most dramatic, but summer can definitely be the
most varied and the most fun.
Its Not Too Late for Annuals
It may seem a bit late to be thinking about putting in a few annuals, but it really isn’t. In fact, now that the rush to get everything planted is over, it is a good time to look around and see what you missed. Some of the early annuals like pansies may be getting tall and lanky and can be replaced. Or you may have lost a few annuals to our erratic spring weather. In order to make it easier for you to fill in those spaces without the plants appearing too small, Bachman’s offers a selection of annuals with a good head start in larger containers. Simply slip them out of their pots and into your garden for instant mature flowers. While you’re planting your new flowers, it is a good time to fertilize the rest of your annuals and perennials with a water soluble such as Bachman’s Mighty Bloom™.
New Trees
Before going to the garden center to choose a new tree for your landscape, look up. Make sure you have enough space for the tree. Overhead wires will determine the type of tree best suited for that particular location. Look down. Make sure you have enough room for the roots, which will extend beyond the drip line of the tree. Next, evaluate the soil; clay, sandy or loam will affect the choice of tree. Armed with these three things, and Bachman’s staff, you will be
sure to pick the perfect tree.
Do you know the saying
‘cool as a cucumber’?
It’s true, the inside of a cucumber on the vine measures as much as 20° F cooler than the outside air on a warm day.
Tips
As flowers fade remove them (this is called “deadheading”) to encourage more blooms.
Annual flowers give a lot of bloom and need regular
applications of fertilizer.
Check the yard and garden to make sure there isn’t
anything collecting water.
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Use a soaker hose to water the tomato garden - water splashing up on the plant can promote disease.
