Bring Those Plants Indoors
You may still have time to move plants indoors. If you’ve brought them indoors and they are tucked around the south or west-facing window, there may be leaf drop going on right now. This leaf drop is a normal part of getting the plants adjusted to the indoor environment. The house environment is drier than outside and the humidity is very low, also the light level you give the plants is lower than outside.Plants that liked full sun exposure outside will be affected the most by the move. These plants may loose 50% or more of their leaves.
If a great deal of leaf drop is experienced, the amount of water needs to be adjusted as well. Fewer leaves means less water usage by the plant. The plant is stressed enough by the move and won’t benefit by too much water or root rot. It’s always best to spray the plants for bugs outside before you bring them in. This time of year is a great time to keep checking for insects on your plants. If a problem develops, the plant can be taken back outside on a warm fall day and sprayed again before the winter snows arrive. There are insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils available at Bachman’s garden centers to help you be bug free and environmentally safe.
Weed Control
It’s not too late to control weeds in the lawn. Use Ferti-Lome Weed Free Zone™ ready to use. It has proven cool weather performance. Weed free zone hooks up right to your hose and once it’s applied to the lawn it will go to work ridding the lawn of all perennial broad leaf weeds. Use the economical Weed Free Zone concentrate in a tank sprayer and it will do the job as well.
Indoor Chrysanthemums
Florist Chrysanthemums are beautiful additions to our homes and are available year round. Among the oldest plants prized for blooms, Chrysanthemums have brightened people’s lives for thousands of years. Available in a wide range of colors and forms, they are perfect for display or gift giving. Mums have earned their well-deserved popularity; once their buds begin to show color, they will bloom as well inan office as they will in a sunny kitchen window or hospital room. The types of mums sold as indoor blooming plants are selected for their reliability and beauty. Unfortunately, they are not as hardy as garden chrysanthemums and they are rarely successful as garden plants.

Echinacea ‘Merlot’

Chrysanthemums should be kept evenly moist, but they must also have good drainage. Be sure to empty the saucer after it drains so the plants won’t sit in water. They do best in full sun, but the flowers will last longer if they are not in direct sunlight when they are in bloom. Luckily, that means they can be used in more places where the show of their beautiful flowers can be enjoyed.
Tips
We recommend spraying the perimeter of your house to reduce the number of insects that tend to move into spaces in siding to find a warm place for winter. There are a variety of sprays to do the job:

Buggslayer concentrate will kill boxelder bugs and Asian ladybugs
Bonide household insect control will kill a wide range of pests inside and out
Ortho Bug-B-Gone Max will kill a wide range of pests inside and out
Enforcer bug max 365 will kill a wide range of pests and keeps working for one year

Water new plantings and evergreens as long as the ground is not frozen. If the ground has moisture going into winter there is less winter damage and less winterkill.

When your garden chores are done, clean your tools and put linseed oil on wooden handles and a spray oil lubricant on the metal parts. This will make them last longer over time.

First disconnect sparkplug from the mower, and then carefully take off the lawn mower blade after the last cutting. Take it to a hardware store to get it sharpened. Clean the cutting deck and let it dry than spray the metal under deck with lubricating oil. Next spring you will be all set to go.

Want some color on your deck? There is still time to plant a few pots of Kale. Kale will take the cold and look better as temperature drops. Kale can look great up to Thanksgiving and could be used as part of the holiday table decoration.

Remove leaves from the lawn. Leaves should not remain on the lawn over winter as they could damage or kill the lawn.

Golden Gourd Centerpiece –
Roger Malloy, Visual Merchandising

Looking for a festive centerpiece idea? Wow guests with this
golden centerpiece. You’ll need a can of gold floral spray paint – antique or burnished gold-colored paint works best (found at your local craft store) and mini pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn and leaves. Spray them with a light, subtle coat of paint (allowing some natural color to show through). Remember to wear gloves and paint outdoors.
