Minnesota has a short growing season (last frost to first frost) ranging from 126 days to just 98 days in the northernmost regions of the state.

Seeds vs. Plants
The decision to start plants from seed or as potted plants is determined by the time and space available. We recommend planting these vegetables as plants over seeding them outdoors:

Tips for Growing Vegetables
Soil
events & seminars Prefers fertile, well-drained, light soil.
Planting
events & seminars Prepare the garden by removing existing vegetation.
events & seminars Till the soil 6–12” deep.
events & seminars Refer to Bachman’s information sheet Vegetable Planting Guide for planting depth.
events & seminars For new gardens, till in organic matter such as peat moss or manure.
Mulch
events & seminars Provide thin layer of mulch after seeds have germinated; such as Earth Food.
events & seminars Mulching cools the soil, conserves water and helps with weeds.
Watering
events & seminars After planting, water well.
events & seminars Once established, gardens generally require an average 1” of moisture per week.
Fertilizer
events & seminars Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer such as 10–10–10 at the time of planting.
Grooming
events & seminars Remove any damaged branches or leaves.
events & seminars Regularly weed the garden; excessive weeds will reduce vegetable production.
Containers
events & seminars Vegetables can also be grown in containers.
events & seminars Fill the container with potting soil; do not use garden or topsoil.
events & seminars Check moisture daily.
events & seminars Fertilize with a water-soluble fertilizer once a week.
