Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments.  Composting is a microbial process that converts plant materials into a garden amendment.  Gardeners have used compost for centuries to increase the soils organic properties, and supply some of the essential nutrients for plant growth.  Using compost provides microorganisms, which keep the soil healthy, provide nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus to help feed the plants.

Composting Structures
They can be made from a variety of materials and as simple or complex as desired.  Here are a few suggestions for containing compost.
events & seminars A barrel or drum generates compost in a short time and provides an easy way for turning.
events & seminars Bin structures are practical for larger quantities of organic waste.  A bin can be made of small spaced woven wire fencing.
events & seminars Three-Chambered Bin is very efficient and durable.  It holds a large amount of material and allows for good air circulation.  This bin works on an assembly line idea, having 3 batches of compost at varying stages.

Composting Tips
Location
events & seminars Locate away from house, corner of the back yard.
Aeration
events & seminars Mix or stir the compost pile once or twice a month will increase oxygen levels and speed the compost process.
events & seminars Adding larger pieces to the compost can also increase oxygen levels.
Moisture
events & seminars Occasionally water the compost during dry periods.  Dry waste will not decompose efficiently.
Particle Size
events & seminars Organic material larger than 2 inches will slow down the compost process.
Nutrients
events & seminars If grass clippings are not added to the compost occasionally add a high nitrogen fertilizer.
