A Brief History of Bachman's

bachman's tour

Bachman's story begins in 1885 when newlyweds Henry and Hattie Bachmans purchased four acres of farmland in Richfield and started growing and selling vegetables. After ten years of hard work, the farm had expanded to 44 acres. The Bachman family had grown, too; eventually five sons and three daughters would share the 15-room farmhouse.

It was Henry's custom to give each of his sons a bench in the greenhouse to raise vegetables that could be sold for pocket money. The course of the family business changed dramatically when son Albert instead decided to use his bench to raise carnations. Year after year his flowers showed a clear profit and gradually the farm's production shifted away from vegetables to flowers.

Today Bachman's is one of the largest floral and garden retailers in the country, with six full-service floral, home and garden centers, a garden and landscape center in Farmington called Cedar Acres and numerous other retail locations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

In addition, the company operates a Landscape Services division, which offers a professional landscape design and installation, a Nursery Wholesale Center and a 513-acre growing range that produces many of the plants, flowers, shrubs and trees sold in Bachman's stores and by Landscaping Services. A commercial Services division provides interior landscaping for offices and decor for corporate events.

Behind The Scenes at Bachman's

Bachman's flagship store on Lyndale Avenue is located on the site of the original Bachman family farm. This Floral, Home and Garden Center has over 200,000 square feet of retail space and features a dramatic gift area, exquisite fresh flowers, a wonderful array of green and blooming plants, seasonal and holiday accents, garden annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and a complete range of lawn and garden products.

During your behind-the-scenes tour of Bachman's on Lyndale, you'll see the phone and internet center, which processes approximately 800 incoming orders every day. You'll also visit the fresh floral design areas where talented designers arrange the bouquets and centerpieces that give people so much pleasure.

Other sights on the tour include the floral coolers, the delivery garage housing brightly colored vans, the greenhouse and the gift and home decor areas.
