Top 4 Lawn & Garden Tips for June Week 1

1. Remove old flowers.
Remove old faded flowers on shrub roses and spring flowering shrubs. This helps improve the shape of the plant and, in the case of shrub roses, encourages more flowers to bloom. The plant will bloom continually throughout the summer if periodic cuts are made as flowers fade.

2. Kill weeds.
A product such as Round-Up is a good way to deal with pesky perennial weeds! But be careful; this spray will destroy any plant it comes in contact with. Try spraying in the morning when there's less wind and adjust the spray nozzle to a narrow stream for targeted application. You can also apply Round-Up directly to plant leaves using a paint brush or a paper towel; just wear rubber gloves for safety.

3. Fertilize acid-loving plants.
Plants such as Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Blue Hydrangea can slowly decline in health over time due to alkaline soils common in the metro area. Poor health causes the green foliage and bright blooms of these plants to fade. To keep them thriving, once a year add 3 cups cottonseed meal onto the top surface for every 25 sq. ft. of root area.

4. Fertilize, water and mow your lawn.
If you haven't fertilized your lawn already, go ahead before the really hot weather arrives. Lawns need 1 inch of rain each week, so if the forecast is dry, bring out the sprinkler! For more stress-resistant grass, mow at a higher height (2 ½" or higher) to promote deep rooting.
